About Our Woodland Garden
The woodland garden at Linton Hall has been a wonderful success to date. We would like to enourage visitors to return regularly to monitor our progress or at least check our "plant status page". Several citizens in our county have made contributions to our woodland garden and we very much appreciate the trees, ferns, and plants they dontated. One of the largest contributors has been the Native Plant Society which provided us several dozen plants in 2007.
The Master Gardener Woodland Garden Team really enjoys working in the woodland bed, from mulching to planting to weeding to watering... it's all very rewarding. Our young garden (started in November of 06) has a long way to go. The drought in the summer of 07 had an effect on some plants. We've found that Green and Gold, Iris Crisata, Solomon's Seal and the phloxes survived quite well. The epidimedium and the hellebores did extremely well too.
Spring is a good time to visit our gardens because so much is in bloom at that time however, we are planting with a four seasons interest in mind. We found that using a spreadsheet depicting season of interest for each plant is helping us determine whether we are accomplishing our goal.
Our thanks to Ed, a master gardener on our team, who built the seating in our garden.

06. Feeds Plants (which means not needing to add chemical fertilizers)

04. Keeps Soil Cooler in Summer (some roots prefer cool soils for optimium growth)
03. Protect Roots in Winter (adds a layer of warmth but don't pile against trucks)
02. Aids in water infiltration (slows water down enabling plants to absorb the water)
01. Soil Improvement / Repair (compost aids in breaking down clay soils)
Please note: Healthy compost will sometimes have a strong earthy odor which will dissipate rapidly once spread.
